This is from the Ladies Home Journal Dessert Cookbook, 1964.
I have paraphrased the directions. Call with questions.

I serve it with a drizzle of lemon juice mixed with confection sugar.

1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg
1 cup molassas
2 and 1/2 cups flour
1 1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp ginger
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp cloves
1 cup of hot water

cream butter and sugar, add the egg and molasses, beat well. mix the spices and the flour together in a bowl, add them to the big bowl of goo. Add the cup of hot water. beat again until smooth.

grease and flour a 9x9 pan and pour in the goo. (I just use a nonstick pan bitches).
bake at 350 (we love 350) for about 45 minutes. It is done when the cake starts to pull away from the edge and the toothpick comes out clean.
